Yemi Akinyemi Dele is a celebrated choreographer, director, performer, correspondent and artist. Born in Liberec to a Nigerian father and a Czech mother, his unique multicultural background has driven him to explore and successfully incorporate into his art a vast variety of cultures from different regions of the world. Through his interest in art, Yemi completed a degree at the Central European Advertising Art Institute, focusing on Art Direction & Copywriting. His devotion to dance was sparked during a trip to LA where Yemi attended a MGFT street dance summer school and had his first taste of modern street dance and other various dance styles. He continued to attend MGFT for several years and obtained a license to teach street dance at the age of 18.
As a performer, Yemi has acted in several productions including Chronicles of Narnia II - Prince Caspian, Red Tails, Uflaithful Klara (Italy, 2009), and the Czech series, Ordinace V Růžové Zahradě. As a dancer he played a principal role for two years in the original Czech musical, Monte Cristo. Yemi was also the first Czech correspondent for MTV Europe and became the host of a popular Czech TV show, ESO.
Yemi’s performances have been well received in Paris, London, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Shanghai and Bombay. In 2010, hip-hop superstar Kanye West invited him to choreograph all of his performances for the Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album and global tour. He first worked with Kanye West on Runaway, a short film shot for his album, in which he choreographed a ballet inspired sequence. His work on Runaway led him to become the trusted director and choreographer for Kanye West’s projects, one of which was described as “the greatest live act in the history of Saturday Night Live.” From there Yemi’s reputation grew and he was later requested by Charlie Straight, a Czech indie-rock band, to direct their music video for School Beauty Queen which was later awarded the 2011 Music Video of the Year by MTV Czech. Most notably, in 2013/2014 Yemi conceived the concept for the production of Kanye West’s YEEZUS TOUR, which he then went on to choreograph and direct.
In 1999, Yemi established JAD Dance Company in Prague. Since then he founded Dance Academy Prague, www.danceacademy.cz, event management company JAD Productions, www.jadpro.cz, talent agency JAD People, www.jadpeople.cz and The Dancer of the Year, a Czech/Slovak internationally televised dance contest. Through JAD Dance Company, Yemi has been able to share unique dance styles which were previously not available to the post-communistic Czech Republic and its dancers. Since its inception, JAD has attracted accomplished dancers from all over the Czech Republic with its reputation for representing a truly unique and high caliber of dance techniques. Since 2007, the JAD Dance Company has been performing annually at the Czech National Building in Manhattan.
The driving force in Yemi’s career is being able to showcase modern dance choreography worldwide that reflects current global affairs. He strives to include dance expressions that represent the human connection with a fusion of cultures and societies. Yemi has become an inspiration to many, not only through his artistic visions, but also through his spirit. He is devoted to developing his craft and collaborating with people who share his vision. It is evident that his desire is to cultivate budding talent, create beautiful and authentic art, while connecting people across the globe. He hopes to motivate young people to develop their talents and to be unafraid of exploring their roots and searching for their individual authenticity.
